Is the gps as accurate in giving your true speed as a correctly calibrated radar gun use by law enforement.

Nope. GPS uses satellite triangulation. The device "opens it's ears" and listens for the sat's signal. Then the internal software does it's magic and tells you where you are. There is some significant and inherent lag times when using this.

Radar guns use microwaves, and focused at that. They aim directly at the object they're timing, and the waves bounce directly back to the emitter/transceiver assembly in microseconds. The software in the radar device does the same as GPS at this point. It does the math and then displays what it's figured out.

The lag time would be the biggest, most significant factor, since the GPS has to listen, calculate, listen, triangulate, listen and display. The radar gun sends and receives in microsecond response time.

yeah, no kidding ! thanks !

any idea how far off they could be or if it is inconsistent ? i always assumed GPS was spot on with speed.
